Wall-Mounted DC Charging Project for an Australian Caravan Park

Discover how SETEC POWER enabled reliable EV charging at an Australian caravan park with 30kW wall-mounted DC fast chargers.

Project Background

Located in Elliott, Northern Territory, Australia, Midland Caravan Park is an important stopover point along the Stuart Highway, serving travelers with accommodation, rest, and essential roadside services. As more EV drivers begin undertaking long-distance journeys across the Australian outback, demand for charging infrastructure along remote highway routes continues to grow. However, public charging availability in inland regions remains limited, making reliable charging access a common challenge for long-distance EV travel.

For caravan parks that already accommodate overnight stays, providing convenient EV charging without disrupting existing operations is becoming an increasingly relevant operational requirement. Midland Caravan Park was looking for a charging solution that could make effective use of the site’s existing electrical infrastructure while also accommodating the practical limitations of a space-constrained parking environment.

Project Challenges

The project had to be designed and implemented within several site limitations.

First, the parking area offered limited available space. Conventional floor-mounted DC chargers would have been difficult to install without affecting vehicle circulation or reducing valuable parking capacity.

In addition, the site only had access to single-phase power and was not connected to a three-phase electrical supply. Many conventional DC fast chargers rely on three-phase infrastructure, and upgrading the site to support it would have significantly increased both installation costs and project complexity.

Given the remote inland location, the charging equipment also needed to withstand long-term outdoor operation under extreme heat and intense sunlight, making environmental durability another key consideration during project planning.

PowerBox 30kW Wall-Mounted DC Fast Charging Solution

To meet the site requirements, SETEC POWER deployed two PowerBox 30kW wall-mounted DC fast chargers equipped with single CCS2 connectors. The solution was designed to align with the site’s existing power conditions and limited space availability while providing reliable charging support for long-distance travelers crossing inland Australia.

30kW DC fast charging:Suitable for overnight charging scenarios, helping travelers replenish daily driving range during long-distance journeys.

Compact wall-mounted design:Minimizes space usage without occupying existing parking bays.

Single-phase power compatibility:Supports deployment using the site’s existing single-phase electrical infrastructure, eliminating the need for complex grid upgrades.

Dynamic power distribution:Adjusts charging output according to vehicle demand, improving operational efficiency under limited power capacity conditions.

Suitable for outdoor environments:Equipped with a 7-inch sunlight-readable touchscreen to support reliable operation in the harsh climate conditions of the Australian outback.

Project Results

The deployment successfully introduced EV charging capability to the site without requiring major infrastructure modifications or reducing available parking capacity.

For travelers, it provides a more accessible and dependable charging option along remote sections of Australia’s inland highway network.

For caravan park operators and other remote hospitality sites, the project also serves as a practical reference for how DC charging infrastructure can be integrated into locations with limited space and constrained electrical capacity.
