According to the latest government data, the number of electric vehicles in Hong Kong has exceeded 140,000—quadrupling in just four years, with one of the fastest growth rates for private EVs worldwide. However, the city has only around 16,500 public charging points, meaning roughly one charger for every 8-9 vehicles—a clear shortage of public charging infrastructure, especially fast charging.

Kowloon Bay is a densely populated commercial district in Hong Kong. Its large shopping malls serve daily visitors, office workers, and ride-hailing drivers. As EV adoption grows across the city, the demand for fast charging at commercial sites has increased significantly.


The Challenge of Deploying Fast Charging in a Commercial Parking Facility

For this shopping mall operator, adding fast chargers came with several challenges. Existing AC chargers took hours to fully charge a vehicle, creating a clear gap between charging time and customer dwell time. How to deploy fast charging within existing power constraints became a practical issue. Since the three fast chargers became operational, the mall parking lot's charging capacity has significantly improved, with users no longer circling repeatedly for available spots. The operator upgraded the charging functionality of selected parking spaces without altering the existing parking layout. As EV charging services continue to evolve in Hong Kong, early deployment of CCS2-based fast charging infrastructure helps commercial sites attract EV-driving customers and supports the city's transition to electric mobility.
